Tooth Whitening or Bleaching

Safe and simple yet effective and affordable procedures using carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to lighten dark or stained teeth, tooth whitening is the most common and successful cosmetic procedure in dentistry today. Our patients know that the products used in our practice are the safest and most effective available. It is not likely that one can achieve results as good with any available over the counter product. Dr. Civin uses only the most highly rated and thoroughly tested products for whitening. We make custom-fit trays made to do the whitening at home in about 10 days. Whitening is often done even before veneers, since lighter teeth to start can make brighter, more natural veneers in the end. Existing crowns and fillings, though, will not be changed by whitening.

Composite tooth colored fillings

Tooth Colored Fillings | Palm Beach Gardens Composite tooth colored fillings are made of resin filled with microscopic porcelain particles. The strength of current composites is similar to the strength of silver mercury fillings. The enormous advantage of composite fillings is that they are bonded to the teeth during placement. Research has shown that a well sealed composite filling can restore the strength of a decayed tooth almost to the level of an unfilled tooth. Also, a well sealed composite filling can last as long as a silver mercury filling. A composite restoration can take twice as long to place as a silver, mercury filling, so they may also prevent a tooth from fracturing, saving money in the long run. For small to moderate sized cavities, Dr. Civin uses composite fillings exclusively due to their beauty and strength. Larger cavities require a porcelain or composite onlay to properly restore the entire shape and function of a broken or decayed tooth.

Porcelain and Composite Inlays and Onlays

Large silver mercury fillings are not only a cosmetic problem, but they can actually encourage a tooth to fracture due to slow expansion of the filling material over time. Also, silver mercury fillings do not adhere to the tooth in any way. Procedures developed in the 1980’s created all porcelain and porcelain composite laboratory made fillings that are aesthetically beautiful and can be bonded into very large cavities. Once bonded, research has proven that the teeth are about 95% as strong as a tooth with no filling at all. Sometimes a bonded onlay can actually reduce your cost of treatment by preventing future fractures. Also, much more of your natural tooth can be preserved compared to placing an old fashioned complete crown.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers | Palm Beach GardensPorcelain veneers are thin, custom-made restorations that are bonded to your existing teeth. Once bonded they are almost as strong as an intact tooth, and have a translucency and polish that can look like an incredibly beautiful natural tooth. The bonding process keeps the veneers sealed from decay for many years. With excellent home care and regular professional cleanings, veneers can last up to 10-15 years or more.

Veneers can be used to close large spaces, whiten severely discolored teeth, straighten moderately crooked teeth without braces, rebuild broken teeth, and lengthen worn teeth. Since they are all porcelain, there is no ugly metal edge to show at your gum line. They blend naturally to create the illusion that no dental work has been done.

Crowns

Crowns are needed when an entire tooth has been damaged by fracture or decay or one that is misaligned, as well as teeth that have undergone root canal therapy. For the ultimate in aesthetics, crowns can cover an entire tooth and rebuild it with all porcelain materials bonded to the tooth. There is no ugly metal line next to the gums, so they can be placed on front and side teeth that show when you smile. Long term success can be achieved with these materials when used in appropriate situations. Dr. Civin can recommend the best material to restore your damaged teeth.

Bridges

Dental Bridges | Palm Beach Gardens

Bridges are replacements for missing natural teeth. A bridge basically consists of two or more crowns on natural teeth that are attached to a artificial tooth called a pontic that replaces the missing tooth. One or more teeth can be replaced with a single bridge.

Usually, structurally sound teeth are required on either side of the missing tooth or teeth, but occasionally a single pontic can be extended at one end of a bridge attached to two or more adjacent teeth. Bridges can also be supported by titanium implants surgically implanted in the jaw.

Porcelain Bridges

Several dental companies have created amazingly strong porcelains that can actually be used in bridges to replace missing teeth. Although careful patient selection is needed, these beautiful new materials have been used successfully in thousands of cases around the world. Dr. Civin would be pleased to evaluate your bridge to see if an all porcelain replacement is appropriate.

Periodontics

Periodontal disease is an infection of the periodontal tissues or ligaments, gums, bone. It is a common (80-90% of the population) bacterial infection of the mouth largely goes unnoticed until significant damage has been done. It is usually transmitted from parent to child, but is also acquired through kissing, especially from spouse to spouse. Early detection is a must, and now with current research reports, it has been found to be directly linked to heart disease. Fortunately, in our office we treat these conditions non-surgically most of the time. Utilizing the most modem techniques and equipment, our goal is to eliminate the source of the infection and restore health.

Endodontics (Root Canal)

This is the field of dentistry that focuses on the interior of the tooth. Root canal therapy is most always a comfortable and simple procedure. This treatment is required when the pulp, which is a network of tissue fibers containing veins and nerves, becomes infected or inflamed.

Bacteria, which is the most common cause of infection and inflammation, enters the pulp of the tooth through decay or a crack. However, other factors may contribute, such as repeated dental procedures, or a blow or traumatic injury to the face. Sometimes Dr. Civin will refer a patient to an endodontist or root canal specialist if he feels it appropriate.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants | Palm Beach GardensA dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is surgically anchored into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefits of using implants is that they do not rely on the neighboring teeth for support. They are permanent and stable. Implants are a great solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth.

Dentures

Complete and partial dentures are removable prosthetic appliances that can replace missing teeth. We have ours constructed with the highest quality, most natural looking denture teeth available today. They are constructed with acrylic, metal and composite materials.

Healthy Gums, Healthy Heart

Healthy gums could help to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. There is increasing evidence of a link between gum and heart disease.

Periodontics | Palm Beach GardensIt is known that high LDL cholesterol, lack of exercise and smoking are risk factors for atherosclerosis and heart attacks.

It is also known that Streptococcus sanguis, the most numerous microorganism found in dental plaque, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen in periodontitis, are bugs that may trigger the formation of blood clot. This long lasting chronic infection produced by dental plaque may initiate a artery-blocking event and contribute to heart attacks.

Gum Diseases, gingivitis and periodontitis, are among the most common infections. Treating gingivitis and periodontitis will prevent further bone and tooth loss, and may also reduce the risk for heart attacks. Gum disease is an infection that triggers a natural defense mechanism in the body. Eliminating this infection is vital to eliminate this inflammatory process.

Dental hygienists and general practitioners delivering and responsible for periodontal treatment and maintenance (tooth cleanings) should be aware of this possible risk factor for heart attacks. It seems that watching an active pocket every recall visit may not only be a risk factor for tooth loss but also for cardiovascular diseases.
